SURFING IN GUATEMALA - SURF SPOTS

Guatemala is the last undeveloped surf destination on the Pacific coast of Central America.

Located along the southern border of Mexico, Guatemala is a tropical destination open to all southerly swells in the Pacific Ocean.

The coastline is full of long uncrowded beach breaks that are unbelievably consistent and often of a very high quality.

BeachCo. Guatemala focuses its surfing trips on the following high quality Guatemalan surfing beaches:

  • Iztapa (An excellent right)
  • El Paredon (Fun beach breaks)
  • Sipacate (Fun beach breaks)
  • Champerico (A fantastic left)

** Other waves not on this list can and may be surfed depending on conditions and preferences.

IZTAPA

The best right hand wave in Guatemala.

The wave breaks between 2 jetties across the entrance to a river mouth.

It is a 200 meter right hand wave that can barrel on good days and provides long walls on other days.

The wave is suitable for experienced and confident intermediate surfers.

  • For experienced surfers, it is best on 4-8ft swells. Depending on the conditions, it can be surfed on bigger swells (8-10ft plus) too!
  • For intermediate surfers, it is best on 3-4ft swells.
  • For learn-to-surf surfers, it is possible to surf inside the river-mouth.

Iztapa is the closest wave to Antigua and Guatemala City, only 75 minutes drive away.

EL PAREDON

The most popular beach-break waves in Guatemala. Having said that, it's easy to find a peak to yourself and crowds are rarely more than 20 people spread out over a large area with endless peaks up and down the beach.

CHAMPERICO

The best left hand wave in Guatemala.

For those travelling from Antigua or Guatemala City, it is definitely a "hard-core" surf trip in that it's a very long trip to make and there is very little else to do or see apart from surf. The flip-side however is that it is the best wave in the country and the best left hander in the region (Southern Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador).

The wave breaks off a jetty and is a 200 meter left hand wave that can barrel on good days and provides long vertical walls on other days.

The wave is suitable for experienced and confident intermediate surfers.

  • For experienced surfers, it is best on 4-8ft swells. Depending on the conditions, it can be surfed on bigger swells (8-10ft plus) too!
  • For intermediate surfers, it is best on a 3-4ft swells.
  • For learn-to-surf surfers, it is possible to surf the shore-break.

Champerico is the furthest wave from Antigua and Guatemala City, about 4 hours drive away.
